Source of the South Tyne Circular Route Details

The return leg of this 11 mile circular walk follows the South Tyne Trail.

Start from Garrigill village green (NY745415) where there is ample parking.

Route:  From the village green walk out past the village hall, where there are public toilets to the bridge over the river.  Once over the bridge take the footpath to the right to Pasture Houses.  Once over the wall stile take the path going sharp right.  Go over another stile in to a small wood and follow this path down to Windshaw Bridge.  Note that this path can be very slippery especially after wet weather.  Go over the bridge and up to Low Crossgill Farm.  Turn left and follow this minor road.  At the cattle grid leave the road and take the path down to Tynehead and up Clargill Burn.  At the top of Clargill Burn where the path goes through a gate and up to the Teesdale Road turn right and head over the moor.  For the next section of the walk there is no path however initially the rout is to the top of Slack’s Rigg.  From here a fence on the left should be visible as well as the cairn on Tynehead Fell.  Walk roughly parallel to the fence heading for the cairn.  On reaching the cairn the two cairns on the summit of Bellbeaver Rigg should be visible.  Head for the closer of the two crossing a fence en-route.  It should be noted that this latter section of the walk over the moorland can be extremely boggy.  On a clear day the views from the summit of Bellbeaver Rigg are excellent in all directions.  Head down and back towards the fence crossed earlier and pick up a path heading to the Source of the South Tyne track.  Once at the track turn right and after a short distance the Source is reached.  The waymarked South Tyne Trail is now followed all the way back to Garrigill.  Shortly before leaving the Open Access land the Trail leaves the track at some ruined buildings and heads to Tynehead that was passed on the way out.  From Tynehead the Trail goes to Hole House then along the valley passing below Ashgill Force where a short detour can be made if a visit to the waterfall is desired.  At Windshaw Bridge it is again over the bridge and up to the road and back to Garrigill.
